A question from Paul..

Hi there,

I’m wondering if you could perhaps pass on a a bit of advice. I have a vintage black arm shell that has black paint in certain spots I would like to remove. Can you please recommend a certain type of paint remover or process that will not damage the actual chair itself–or strip the original black finish and fibers from underneath the paint?

love your site,
thanks so much,
Paul

You could try some mineral spirits, maybe a magic eraser. Really depends on how much paint is on there. If it’s just splatter, the eraser would probably to the trick. It can, as well as anything else though harm the original finish. I can’t think of any product that doesn’t have the potential to do harm. In a worse case scenario, if it does harm the finish at all, you could just do a light coat of penetrol and it’d look as good as new.

Don’t know if you’ve already tried something, but maybe Soy Gel? It’s a safe paint stripping agent that may not harm the fiberglass. You could try contacting their customer service to check.

    Just a thought.
