The Void house – Brussels

I found this and thought I’d share it with you. I think its all kinds of cool.
Suspended between two points and built up I think it is a very unique idea for a house.
I’m guessing noise might travel pretty far in there judging by the central stairwell, but it’s still a good looking place!

“How Much Does your Building Weigh, Mr Foster?”

This was pointed out to us by our good friend Andrew Miller and it is really a breathtaking piece of film. Its not exactly chairfaggery, but it shows some amazing architecture from around the world and is really a beautiful video short.

The film traces the rise of one of the world’s premier architects, Norman Foster and his unending quest to improve the quality of life through design. Portrayed are Foster’s origins and how his dreams and influences inspired the design of emblematic
projects such as the largest building in the world, Beijing Airport, the Reichstag, the Hearst Building in New York and works such as the tallest bridge ever in Millau France. In the very near future, the majority of mankind will abandon the countryside and live entirely in cities.
Foster offers some striking solutions to the problems that this historic event will create.
Architecture comes alive. Foster’s projects are photographed in a cinematic style that seeks to bring the spectacular nature of their size and scale to the big screen.

Meanwhile in the Chairfag.com office….

Ha! I wish the office was that tidy! After working a lot using my grass green side shell, I can totally see the benefit of using a sideshell as a standard office chair. Its really comfortable considering its static.

What do you guys and gals use as your office chair?

Check out this cool loft

This loft is in Philadelphia and was designed by 3 architects.
I love the way they have defined the rooms using bookshelves.

A question from Paul..

Hi there,

I’m wondering if you could perhaps pass on a a bit of advice. I have a vintage black arm shell that has black paint in certain spots I would like to remove. Can you please recommend a certain type of paint remover or process that will not damage the actual chair itself–or strip the original black finish and fibers from underneath the paint?

love your site,
thanks so much,
Paul

oklahoma elegance!

our longtime friends Katy Eagleston and Monika Bhow both of Tulsa, Oklahoma. have enhanced the style and comfort of their homes with classic original furnishings over the last months.

Miss Katy received a early christmas gift of 2 matching Eames DSX side chairs in an pristine elephant grey, both chairs have been treated with our ‘penetrol’ technique and have wonderful luster and gloss. they are a perfect fit to her evolving eclectic home!

Miss Monika ordered a Eero Saarinen Womb Chair with Ottoman, finished in red hopsack wool this past week, her local dealer is working with Knoll and production time should be 3 months until she can relax in Eero’s arms, what a treat that day will be.

please send the webmaster photos of your lovely additions to your elegant homes.

A success story from Rémi!

Hi everyone!
We had a really cool email from Reader Rémi in France!
Please read:

Hi
I had the opportunity to buy last year 13 shells in a really bad shape.
I found them in the backyard af an antique shop in brooklyn, i came 3 times to the shop before the seller show them to me.
Finally i baught all of them for 250 usd.
Some of the mounts were missing, the fiberglass was covered of dirt , and as they were staked with screws, i had on each shell 4 cracks due to the screw of the top chair.
I baught them with out the legs.
My idea was to restore them, keep 6 for me and sell the other ones on ebay in france, so that i could get my chairs for free.
I found you website and i can tell, that it is the best one on the internet for restoration, i have spent so many hours on the internet, your tutorial is the best.
I found easyly on internet and ebay, shockmounts, dowel bases, epoxy, and i baught the famous penetrol that i braught back to france.
It took me one year to renew all the chairs.
Below are some pictures before and after, just enjoy….

By the way, a question i couldn’t find the answer:
all the shells have à “Z” embossed between the 2 back shockmounts does it means “zenith plastics”?
they also have a “S” in a circle, i was told that means cinncinaty millicrons, if you know it would be helpfull.

One another thing that would be great is to have explanations of all the letters embossed under the chairs, as i know herman miller contracted different manufacturers for the shells
(i know, “zenith plastics” / “cincinnaty millicrons” / “vitra” for europe.

I did it exactly the way you explained it on the tutorial.
The extra thing i did, i used the magic sponge from mister clean to clean the dirt that was in the fiber, it’s a little bit hard and long but the result is great.

I’m now starting my business and my company, cause i had opportunities to buy other chairs, as i’m coming to the US to work 4 times à year.
I just buy the shells, they are easy to pack and ship, i get the bases in europe.
I can tell you that one year ago, i didn’t know anything about restoration,
thanks a lot to you guys.

Rémi Deschamps
from France

Its so cool to hear really great success stories like this! Well done to you Rémi!!
Here are some of his pictures!

Remi-

1. your Z stamp can stand for ‘Zenith’ the plastics manufacturer or more likely it is a brand for what they referred to as “ZENALLOY” the material they were trying to advertise for the new molded seats.

2. does your Z chair carry the roped edge?
